Washington, D.C. – U.S. Rep. Mike Thompson (CA-5), Chair of the House Gun Violence Prevention Task Force, today announced that Task Force member Rep. David Cicilline (D-RI) will now serve on the Task Force as one of 13 Vice Chairs. The Vice Chairs and Thompson comprise the Task Force’s leadership team.

Washington, D.C. – U.S. Rep. Mike Thompson (CA-5) today released the following statement in response to the shootings in Dallas, Texas.

“Last night, a peaceful night was shattered by senseless violence when law enforcement officers were targeted and killed. We cannot allow this epidemic of gun violence to continue devastating our communities. We must come together as a nation to end this horrific violence. Our thoughts and prayers are with Dallas and the families of those who lost their lives.”

U.S. Reps. Mike Thompson (CA-5) and Mark DeSaulnier (CA-11) visited the Martinez Early Childhood Center on Monday to present a check totaling $4.5 million of federal grant money to support Head Start services throughout Contra Costa County.

Specifically, the funding will be used to increase the number of children in high quality early learning programs with local partnerships, increase the rate of pay for Family Child Care Providers, and increase teacher qualifications, educational standards, and family and community engagement.

Thompson and Rep. Paul Cook (R-San Bernardino) introduced the Earthquake Mitigation Tax Incentive Act (H.R. 5610) to exclude earthquake mitigation incentives from being taxed at the federal level. California has already made these incentives tax free at the state level.

YOUNTVILLE — Amends were offered Tuesday for the rough treatment that many Vietnam veterans received when they came home from war.

“I remember coming back and getting spit on,” said Gary McConnell, 73. “I couldn’t wait to get out of my uniform.”

McConnell served three combat tours in South Vietnam and 11 total years in the military– he still has a scar on his left arm from where he was hit with shrapnel.

Arnulfo Solorio believes that learning English helped advance his farmworker career, and his dream of seeing fellow farmworkers achieve the same is being realized through the Napa Valley Farmworker Foundation, which held its first farmworker recognition and donor appreciation luncheon Tuesday.

“My dream is that farmworkers can speak, read and write English. That they have basic math skills. That they acquire leadership skills. That they acquire general viticulture skills, and have access to professional development,” Solorio told attendees at the luncheon held at Solage Calistoga.
