The U.S. Postal Service has decided not to demolish the historic Franklin Station Post Office in downtown Napa that was damaged in last year's 6.0-magnitude earthquake.

U.S. Rep, Mike Thompson, D-Napa, informed the city in a letter on Wednesday that the USPS intends to sell the building and property.

The sale includes the stipulation that the buyer will repair the building to preserve its architectural integrity. The building at 1351 Second St. is on the National Register of Historic Places.

U.S. Rep. Mike Thompson, a Vietnam combat veteran and former senior member of the House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence, came out this week in support of the President Obama's embattled Iran Nuclear Agreement.

"A nuclear-armed Iran is unacceptable," he said. "There are only two ways to prevent Iran from developing a nuclear weapon: Diplomacy or military force. My first choice is diplomacy."

Thompson, who represents California's 5th district, which includes most of Napa and Solano counties, said he has been following this issue closely for many years.

NAPA, CA – U.S. Rep. Mike Thompson (CA-5) today announced that the United States Postal Service (USPS) has agreed at this time to stop pursuing the demolition of the Historic Franklin Station Post Office in downtown Napa and will instead pursue the sale of the building and property. The USPS originally proposed demolishing the earthquake-damaged structure.

North Coast Congressman Mike Thompson said Wednesday he will vote for President Barack Obama's Iran nuclear deal, calling it "the best way forward" to prevent the regime from obtaining a nuclear weapon.

The St. Helena Democrat said Obama's proposal will halt Iran's efforts for up to 15 years while giving the International Atomic Energy Agency "enormous access" for inspections the country will be bound to honor.

In an abrupt about-face, the United States Postal Service (USPS) announced it won't pursue demolition of the historic Franklin Station Post Office in downtown Napa. Instead, the federal agency plans to sell the quake-damaged building to a buyer who can repair the structure and preserve its architectural integrity.

A public notice of the intent to sell was posted on Tuesday on all postal properties in the city.
