Mike Thompson loaded a shell into his shotgun and snapped the barrel into place. He raised the gun, calmly uttered "pull" and fired at the flying clay pigeon, shattering it as it ascended. He released the shell and pocketed it in his vest in one swift motion.

WASHINGTON, D.C. -- Congressman Mike Thompson (D-St. Helena) announced the set of recommendations offered by the House Gun Violence Prevention Task Force Thursday.

"Moving forward I will use these recommendations to develop and influence legislation in both the House and Senate and work to get legislation based on these principles signed into law," Thompson, who represents part of Lake County, said.

U.S. Rep. Mike Thompson, D-St. Helena, on Thursday unveiled a package of reforms intended to prevent gun violence that calls for banning assault weapons and high capacity magazines, increased penalties for gun trafficking, and instituting background checks for every firearms purchase.

Surrounded by Democratic leaders in the House of Representatives, Thompson announced a 15-point plan â€" the product of a gun violence task force Thompson's chaired â€" that Democrats intend to introduce as legislation.

Rep. Mike Thompson, D-St. Helena, on Thursday released a set of 15 policy recommendations on preventing gun violence, including a federal ban on assault weapons and background checks for most gun buyers, as well as proposals regarding mental health, school safety and media portrayals of violence.

Thompson, whose district includes Santa Rosa and southeast Sonoma County, said in a telephone interview that the proposals will be a "blueprint" for legislation by House Democrats and there is "an excellent chance" that many of them will become law.
