Legislation to require background checks for gun purchases and to limit high-capacity ammunition magazines have the best chance of gaining bipartisan support to pass the U.S. House and Senate, said California Representative Mike Thompson.

Thompson, a Democrat and gun owner who is leading a House panel on gun violence prevention, returned to Washington today to meet with Vice President Joe Biden as the White House prepares to release its recommendations by tomorrow for legislative and executive actions to curb gun violence.

The House Democrat leading a task force on reducing gun violence says new background checks on gun purchasers and bans on extended magazine clips could win bipartisan support in Congress.

Speaking at the Center for American Progress on Monday, Rep. Mike Thompson (D-Calif.), the chairman of a congressional task force on gun prevention, said he could see both Republicans and Democrats supporting legislation on extended bullet magazines and background checks.

Rep. Mike Thompson, D-St. Helena, asked for ideas from the community for combating gun violence at three forums last week â€" one in rural Napa, one in urban Vallejo and one in suburban Santa Rosa. I attended the Vallejo event. From what I've read and saw, at all three events gun owners were convinced the forum was strictly about controlling gun ownership â€" despite Thompson's frequent disclaimers that the Second Amendment and two relatively recent Supreme Court rulings clearly say civilians have the right to own guns.

Vice President Joe Biden will meet with members of the House of Representatives on Monday to discuss the administration's efforts to stem gun violence.

Biden, joined by Attorney General Eric Holder, Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano and Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius, will speak with members of the House Democratic task force on gun violence at 11 a.m., according to a White House official.
Rep. Mike Thompson (D-Calif.), chairman of the Congressional Gun Violence Prevention Task Force, will attend the meeting with the group's 12 vice chairs.
