112th Congress
Healdsburg firefighters are accustomed to coming to the rescue of others. Now the federal government is coming to the aid of the strapped Fire Department with a $325,000 federal grant to beef up staffing.
“We are thrilled to have received the grant, because what it does is allow us to fully fund a 40-hour firefighter position,” City Manager Marjie Pettus said. “It's fantastic news.”
1st District Congressman Mike Thompson has announced a $145,837 federal grant that will help provide permanent housing and support to veterans on the North Coast. The grant, provided through the Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD), will be administered by the North Coast Veterans Resource Center and Humboldt County Housing Authority. The funds will be used as vouchers to provide rental assistance for homeless and disabled veterans. Twenty-five vouchers were awarded.
Please join me and Congressman George Miller for a Veterans Resource Fair! Hear from and meet with representatives from local VA Medical Centers, the VA Oakland Regional Office, and other federal agencies that offer services and benefits to veterans!

Competition in our global economy is increasing and a college education is getting more expensive. This is counterintuitive. If our nation is going to remain competitive in our global economy, then we must continue producing the world's best entrepreneurs and innovators. And if we are going to continue producing the world's best entrepreneurs and innovators, then a college education must be an affordable option for working families.
My first kayak river run took place in six hours over 20 miles of Cache Creek, a state wild and scenic river.
It was ever-so-scenic, with canyons, rock uplifted from ancient ocean beds in vertical stripes and curves, 1906 earthquake landslides coming down to water's edge, gray pines and blue oaks outlined against a blue sky.
And wild, too. The stream was swift and cold on Memorial Day, a challenge for this novice kayaker - and a fun, if more routine first run of the season for the experienced paddlers in our group of seven.
