Competition in our global economy is increasing, and a college education is getting more expensive. This is counterintuitive. If our nation is going to remain competitive in our global economy, then we must continue producing the world's best entrepreneurs and innovators. And if we are going to continue producing the world's best entrepreneurs and innovators, then a college education must be an affordable option for working families.

The ongoing turmoil over management of Lake Berryessa's resorts reached the floor of Congress on Thursday night, as Napa County's Rep. Mike Thompson secured bipartisan pledges to find a fix.

While short on specifics, Thompson's three-minute remarks before a House Appropriations subcommittee will surely step up pressure on the Bureau of Reclamation (BOR) as it enters mediation with the contractor operating five of the seven resorts at the lake.

half-century ago, the 400-mile stretch of Highway 101 between San Francisco and the Oregon border was a two-lane roadway that meandered through dozens of small towns. During summer months, it was clogged with logging trucks and vacationers' trailers.

Mile-by-mile, at no small cost, almost all of Highway 101 was upgraded, mostly to freeway, allowing traffic to move more smoothly and rapidly. But a few bottlenecks remained.

Congressman Mike Thompson (CA-1) today secured the passage of his amendment to H.R. 5743, the Fiscal Year (FY) 2013 Intelligence Authorization Act that will help make sure small businesses receive fair opportunities to compete for intelligence community contracts. I am glad to see that throughout our district, American flags are proudly displayed on homes, businesses and in town squares. Wherever a flag is flown, it is a symbol of the freedoms men and women throughout our history have marched, fought and died to secure.

It was flown on the beach in Normandy. It was raised over Iwo Jima. Through the haze of tear gas and the smack of billy clubs, it was carried over the Edmund Pettus Bridge in Selma, Ala. It has draped the coffins of countless heroes who have fallen overseas.

Dear Friend,

Today, on Memorial Day, we honor the men and women who laid down their lives for our nation's most treasured and highest ideals: freedom, liberty and democracy.

As we honor their service to our nation, let us also remember the Americans who are serving our nation around the world today. Without the brave efforts of generations of soldiers, sailors, airmen, Marines, Merchant Marines, and Coast Guardsmen and their families, our country would not live so freely.
