Rep. Mike Thompson, D-St. Helena, asked for ideas from the community for combating gun violence at three forums last week â€" one in rural Napa, one in urban Vallejo and one in suburban Santa Rosa. I attended the Vallejo event. From what I've read and saw, at all three events gun owners were convinced the forum was strictly about controlling gun ownership â€" despite Thompson's frequent disclaimers that the Second Amendment and two relatively recent Supreme Court rulings clearly say civilians have the right to own guns.

Two hundred people squeezed into a public forum at Vallejo City Hall chambers Wednesday night to offer their solutions for preventing gun violence. Their proposals and observations - on the role of government, the rights and responsibilities of gun ownership, attitudes toward mental health treatment, even on abortion and creationism - reveal how deeply rooted guns are in American culture.

Emotions ran deep and opinions wide Wednesday night at a packed gun violence prevention forum at Vallejo City Hall. Many speakers supported gun ownership while others called for greater measures to prevent senseless shootings.
Sponsored by Rep. Mike Thompson, D-St. Helena, the forum came in the wake of last month's school shooting tragedy in Connecticut. The meeting drew social service experts, school

If you, like the majority of Americans, think it's a good idea to regulate the sale and possession of firearms and maybe even ban high-capacity rapid-fire weapons that are designed to kill large numbers of people in short amounts of time, then you probably have high hopes for the work of Vice President Joe Biden and North Coast Congressman Mike Thompson, both of whom are convening high-level committees to address the gun issue.
