January 10, 2020

Washington – Today Rep. Mike Thompson (CA-05), Rep. Jared Huffman (CA-02) and 38 Members of Congress from both parties wrote to the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) asking it to drop its claim to funding in the settlement fund set up for survivors of the 2017 and 2018 Northern California wildfires. The fund was established by Pacific Gas and Electric to help the thousands still rebuilding since the fires.

Washington – Today Rep. Mike Thompson (CA-05), a combat veteran and former member of the House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence, voted to pass H. Con. Res. 83, a War Powers Resolution designated to limit the President's military actions regarding Iran. The legislation passed on a bipartisan vote. This resolution sends a message that the President must protect American lives by de-escalating tensions with Iran and follow Constitutionally-mandated protocol when deciding whether to use military force.

Washington – Today Gun Violence Prevention Task Force Chairman Mike Thompson (CA-05) marked one year since the introduction of H.R. 8, the Bipartisan Background Checks Act of 2019. The bill was introduced eight years to the day after then Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords, her staff and her constituents were shot at a community event in her district. Upon passage with bipartisan support in February 2019, the Chairman's legislation was the first major action to help prevent gun violence in a generation.

Washington – Today Rep. Mike Thompson (CA-05) and Rep. Ken Calvert (CA-42) announced that they have introduced the bipartisan Catastrophe Loss Mitigation Incentive and Tax Parity Act, a bill to exclude from federal taxation state-based grants that support pre-disaster mitigation and give homeowners greater incentives to take action to protect their homes against wildfires, windstorms, and earthquakes.

Washington – Today Chairman of the House Ways and Means Subcommittee on Select Revenue Measures Rep. Mike Thompson (CA-05) hailed the passage of his legislation H.R. 5377, the Restoring Tax Fairness for State and Localities Act. This bill temporarily repeals the State and Local Tax (SALT) Deduction Cap, a change that was hastily made in the 2017 Republican tax law and unfairly penalized taxpayers in districts like California's Fifth Congressional District. Thompson led debate on the House floor and released the following statement after today's debate.

Washington – Today Rep. Mike Thompson (CA-05), a member of the eight-person United States Mexico Canada Working Group, voted to pass legislation to implement the improved USMCA trade agreement. Thompson released the following statement after the vote.

"The trade agreement originally presented to Congress earlier this year missed the mark, offering few benefits for American workers, lacking protections for our environment, and making prescription drugs more expensive. The original deal was unenforceable, a non-starter for me and my colleagues.

Washington – Today Rep. Mike Thompson (CA-05), a former member of the House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence, voted for the two articles of impeachment offered by the House Committee on the Judiciary after weeks of an impeachment inquiry conducted by the Intelligence Committee. The first article charges the President with an abuse of power and the second with an obstruction of Congress. A statement from Thompson on his vote is below.

Washington – Today Rep. Mike Thompson (CA-05) announced that Kai Rush and Benji Ryuijin have been selected as the 2019 App Challenge winners for the Fifth Congressional District for their app Space Trace. Kai and Benji are seniors at Benicia High School and competed against more than a dozen other app designers in this year's challenge. They were selected by a group of local technology experts.

Washington – Gun Violence Prevention Task Force Chairman Mike Thompson (CA-05) applauded House and Senate negotiators for including in the spending deal $25 million for research into our nation's gun violence epidemic and $78 million in federal funding for the National Instant Background Checks System (NICS). This is the first time Congress has funded gun violence research in over 20 years and is $3 million more in NICS funding than was provided for in last year's budget. A vote on this deal with this funding included is set to happen later this week.
