Washington – Today Gun Violence Prevention Task Force Chairman Mike Thompson (CA-05) celebrated the passage of H.R. 8, his Bipartisan Background Checks Act of 2021. The bill would expand background checks to be required on all firearm sales, closing the gun show and online sales loopholes. Thompson is a gun owner, hunter and supporter of the Second Amendment. He's led the Task Force since it was established in 2012 after the tragedy at Sandy Hook Elementary School. A statement from Thompson is below.

Washington – Today Rep. Mike Thompson (CA-05) voted to pass H.R.1319, the final version of the American Rescue Plan, comprehensive COVID-19 relief legislation. This bill, first passed in the House last month, was amended by the Senate, came back to the House for a vote and now heads to President Biden's desk for signature. Washington – Today Rep. Mike Thompson (CA-05) voted to pass H.R. 5, the Equality Act, landmark legislation to ensure LGBTQ people are not discriminated against in education, housing, employment and other public accommodations. Under many state laws, LGBTQ individuals are still at risk of being fired, evicted or denied service because of their sexual orientation or gender identity. This bill, of which Thompson is an original coauthor, creates a national standard to prohibit such discrimination by amending the Civil Rights Act.
